British athletes seek to make waves in and on the water as the Olympic Games get underway with swimming and rowing heats and the first diving final.
Two-time defending 100m breaststroke champion Adam Peaty begins his campaign, while a stacked women’s 400m freestyle includes the world-class trio of American Katie Ledecky, Ariarne Titmus of Australia and Canadian teenager Summer McIntosh.
In diving, the women’s synchronised 3m springboard final features 2023 world silver medallists Yasmin Harper and Scarlett Mew Jensen, who could become the first British female divers to finish on an Olympic podium since 1960.
Britain’s men’s hockey team are in action, and there’s also badminton and tennis. Jeanette Kwakye and JJ Chalmers present.
Hazel Irvine introduces live coverage of the men’s and women’s road cycling time trials, with Great Britain’s Josh Tarling among the fancied riders on the 32.4km course.
Cyclists start at 90-second intervals, with the fastest time earning gold. Welshman Tarling won global bronze and European gold last year, and the 20-year-old retained his national time trial title in emphatic fashion last month. His likely medal rivals in Paris include Italy’s two-time world champion Filippo Ganna and multiple global medallist Wout van Aert of the Netherlands.
In the women’s race, reigning world champion Chloe Dygert and Olympic silver medallist Marlen Reusser are among the favourites. There’s also action from the semi-finals of the men’s rugby sevens event.
Who will rule the pool in the four swimming finals on the first night of the games? Clare Balding introduces the action, which also features Britain’s Olympic champion Adam Peaty.
Peaty continues his defence of the 100m breaststroke title in this evening’s semi-finals but the highlight of the session promises to be the final of the women’s 400m freestyle, with reigning champion Ariarne Titmus, Katie Ledecky and Summer McIntosh combining to own the 28 fastest times in history prior to the Olympics.
Elsewhere, there’s the men’s artistic gymnastics qualification and the climax to the men’s rugby sevens as the medal matches take place at the Stade de France. Fiji won gold at the previous two Olympics, but host nation France have enjoyed their best season in this format of the game, inspired by the presence of former World Rugby Player of the Year Antoine Dupont.
