One of the great athletics rivalries of all time is renewed on Paris’s roads as history-chasing Eliud Kipchoge faces three-time Olympic track champion Kenenisa Bekele in the marathon.
The pair have been trading titles for more than two decades, but Kipchoge has changed the face of the marathon and is aiming to become the first person to win three successive Olympic titles over the 26.2-mile distance.
The other medals decided early on today are in women’s sport climbing and canoe sprint, while the final round of the women’s golf also gets underway. Join Hazel Irvine for what promises to be a breathless afternoon of Olympic action as more medals are decided in diving, track cycling, golf and rhythmic gymnastics.
British hopes will be focused on the aquatics centre and velodrome, with diver Noah Williams hoping to challenge the imperious Chinese in the men’s 10m platform final, while track cyclist Ethan Hayter will have a new partner in the madison as he seeks a second successive Olympic medal in the event. It’s also the early stages of the women’s sprint, featuring British world champion Emma Finucane.
Clare Balding and Gabby Logan guide you through the busiest night of the games as athletics concludes with eight finals and Britain go for glory in boxing, pentathlon and taekwondo.
Middle distance World Championship medallists Ben Pattison and Laura Muir will hope to be in the running in the men’s 800m and women’s 1,500m final respectively, with the athletics set for a thrilling climax as the Dutch women’s 4x400m relay world champions led by Femke Bol take on Tokyo 2020 winners USA.
Team GB’s Joe Choong defends his modern pentathlon title, while attention later turns to combat sports, with boxing super heavyweight Delicious Orie and taekwondo world silver medallist Rebecca McGowan among Britain’s leading contenders for gold.
