MURDER CASE RENEWED FOR FURTHER THREE CASES BY BBC

Award-winning documentary series Murder Case will return in later this year and early 2027 on BBC Scotland and BBC iPlayer, focussing on three cases – the murder of Cameron Logan in an arson attack while he slept in the family home, the mysterious vanishing of bookkeeper Suzanne Pilley on her way to work in Edinburgh; and the cold case of Marion Hodge whose elderly husband was set to stand trial over 40 years after her disappearance. Murder Case is a BBC Scotland commission, made by Firecrest Films.

The three new cases which will feature on BBC iPlayer and BBC Scotland will be: Cameron Logan: ‘Fire in Suburbia’ (2x60) – Cameron was just 23-years-old when, in the early hours of New Years Day 2017, he was set alight and murdered at his family home in Milngavie, East Dunbartonshire. Bravely told through the eyes of Cameron’s girlfriend, Rebecca Williams (then 25), who survived the attack, this two-part series charts the hours and days which followed as the police painstakingly investigate the evidence to find who is responsible.

As key witness Rebecca lies critically ill in hospital, it’s a race against time for the police to track down a known arsonist and a mysterious car spotted in a lay-by at the time of the fire. Rumour and suspicion intensify among this small community and the press - particularly when it comes to light that Cameron’s own brother Blair has long-held hostility towards him - leaving everyone to contemplate whether the answer lies closer to home.

Suzanne Pilley: ‘A Fatal Affair’ (1x60) – In 2010, Bookkeeper Suzanne Pilley disappeared on her way to work in the centre of Edinburgh. As detectives scour CCTV for clues, it becomes clear that Suzanne made it to her work, but not her desk. Looking for answers, her distraught colleagues search her email and discover a secret affair between Suzanne and her colleague and married man, David Gilroy.

Specialist dogs reveal key evidence in the office basement which sparks a nationwide search for Suzanne’s body - following breadcrumbs of evidence left by Gilroy - which takes them to the remote forests of Argyll. Murder Case tells the story of a forensic police investigation and a distraught family determined to find answers and justice for Suzanne.

Marion Hodge: ‘The Day My Mother Vanished’ (1x60) – 34-year-old Marion Hodge was last seen alive on 5th July 1984, on the eve of her son’s 15th birthday. She has never been seen again – has never sent a birthday card to her children, didn’t attend her parents’ funerals and did not reach out when the nose of Pan Am 103 landed close to her family’s farmhouse in 1988. For these, and countless other reasons, police are convinced that she did not run away, as her husband William Hodge claimed.

However, it isn’t until the case is reopened in 2023, through the lens of modern-day policing, that the evidence finally provides answers. Alongside the intrepid investigators, the programme features Marion’s sisters and her daughter Kathy, who share their agonising journey to find Marion and the heartbreaking reckoning they have undergone following a lifetime of lies and betrayal.

The forthcoming new series of Murder Case (4x60) features interviews with the families of the victims, the media who covered the cases as well as the police who brought the perpetrators to justice. Further Murder Case series for 2027 will be announced in due course.

David Harron, Commissioning Editor, Documentaries and Specialist Factual at BBC Scotland said: “Murder Case remains one of our most important and popular brands and this new collection of stories keeps the standard as high as ever. With exceptional access to the Major Investigations Team of Police Scotland plus family and friends of the victims it offers the audience real insight into how these murder investigations are conducted. And, as always, the often-heartbreaking stories are told sensitively and with great care and consideration.”

Vari Innes, Executive Producer at Firecrest Films says: “We are incredibly proud to be bringing three more compelling Murder Case investigations to the BBC. With unique access to Police Scotland’s Major Investigation Teams, these films highlight cases across four decades, highlighting the unerring dedication of the officers to get justice for the victims and their families. It has been an enormous privilege that those victims and families have trusted our teams to tell these stories and an honour to remember their loved ones in the films. We hope we can bring to light the incredible fortitude and determination they have had in their quest for justice.”

BBC Scotland’s crime documentaries continue to appeal to audiences in Scotland and across the UK.
