Gavin & Stacey co-writers and stars James Corden and Ruth Jones have reportedly signed a multi-million pound deal with Apple TV+ to write and star in a major new ten-part comedy drama.

The duo have been in huge demand following the finale of Gavin & Stacey last Christmas on BBC One which became the UK’s most-watched scripted show across all broadcasters and streamers since current records began in 2002. The last ever episode of the hit British sitcom took the top spot on Christmas Day and was watched by a staggering 12.3 million viewers, beating their 2019 special and making it the biggest Christmas Day overnight since 2008.
The Sun newspaper now reports that the pair have been snapped up by streamer Apple TV+ for the new series, which will be a completely new story with new characters. Filming is reportedly due to commence next year and land in 2027. Apple TV+ have yet to formally announce the show.
Deadline has followed up on the story, reporting the series will be titled 'The Choir' and will star Corden and Jones and siblings Ben and Lisa, who've not seen each other for "several years."
Deadline report: "Ben has been living abroad, while Lisa has carried on in their small English town where nothing ever happens. But when events take a sorry turn, Ben is forced to return to a life he never wanted, a town he never liked and a family from which he’s estranged."
A source told the tabloid: "They wanted to bring something full of heart and warmth back to screens; water cooler moments for all the family. Naturally there was a lot of interest around the script and a major bidding war to land this production. But James already had an excellent relationship with Apple TV+. It acquired the rights to his Carpool Karaoke, and it made sense to go in this direction."
Meanwhile, Ruth Jones is to star in new Harlan Coben drama Run Away for Netflix. In Run Away, Simon had the perfect life: loving wife and kids, great job, beautiful home. But then his eldest daughter Paige ran away and everything fell apart. So now when he finds her, vulnerable and strung out on drugs in a city park, he finally has the chance to bring his little girl home.
But it turns out she’s not alone and an argument escalates into shocking violence that will shatter Simon’s life all over again. His search for his daughter will take him into a dangerous underworld, revealing deep secrets that could tear his family apart forever.
More details will be announced in due course.
