On this week’s episode of The Jonathan Ross Show, Jonathan is joined by one of Hollywood’s best loved and most enduring actors Kurt Russell, legendary Talking Heads songwriter and frontman David Byrne, star of the much-anticipated Peaky Blinders film Tim Roth, The Sky at Night host and space scientist Dame Maggie Aderin, hilarious comedian Sara Pascoe and the hugely popular Stick Season singer, with over 15 billion streams worldwide, Noah Kahan will be performing in the studio.

One of Hollywood’s best loved actors Kurt Russell speaks to Jonathan ahead of the release of his brand-new television series The Madison. On his 43 year relationship with actress Goldie Hawn, Kurt says “It is amazing. She is amazing.
She is one of the great people on the planet. We met in 1966 and we were doing a Disney movie. It was her first movie. Years later, she was doing a picture called Swing Shift and we met.” Quizzed by Jonathan on whether he and Goldie are married, Kurt replies “You never know.”
Speaking about daughter Kate Hudson’s Academy Award nomination, Kurt says “Goldie is going to be her date. I thought I was going to be in London at the time. I think I’m probably going to have a suit sitting by. I’m going to get home in time to be there.”
Kurt also recounts his experience of meeting Princess Diana and says “I met Diana - it was the royal premiere for Backdraft. I was sitting in between her and Charles. I understand her difficulties with paparazzi and all that kind of thing. I said if you ever want to go somewhere that’s pretty under control, we’ll work it out - let me know.
“I think Fergie and Goldie had somehow later on got talking. She [Diana] brought the two boys and they stayed there for a week and had a wonderful time. I wasn’t there, none of us were there at the time but she wrote some really nice cards and things like that. I’ve seen Harry a number of times since then and he always remembers and he’s very sweet - he always remembers it as one of the really fun times they had. I think it’s a great thing - the Future King of England [Prince William] was sleeping in my son’s room!”
Recounting his first feature film role alongside Elvis Presley, Kurt says “It Happened at the World's Fair. I wasn’t co-starring - I was kicking him in the shins. He wanted to get some pity from a nurse so he told this kid he’d pay him a quarter to kick him in the shins. They had him padded up and they gave me a few gos at it.”
Kurt in fact then went on to play Elvis Presley in the 1979 tv-movie Elvis. Speaking about preparing for the role, Kurt says, “I had a lot of people giving me stuff for research purposes which was amazing looking back on it. But it was primarily my memory of having worked with him. He was 27 years old when I worked with him and I was 27 when I did that.”
Asked by Jonathan on whether Kurt has any plans to retire from showbusiness, Kurt replies “You do run into these time periods where you think sometimes but there is something about acting, it never gets old. I’ve had the great opportunity to play different broad characters and genres and that was on purpose because it kept me interested. I really enjoy it and I continue to really enjoy it. The Madison show is very different, it’s the first time I’m playing someone very like myself - I like that a lot too.”
During his brand-new tour Who Is The Sky? legendary Talking Heads songwriter and frontman David Byrne joins Jonathan and speaks about how he has changed since his career began and says “I think I’ve changed. I’ve been doing it for a while. I’ve gotten a little more comfortable. Years have passed and I’m more comfortable around people. Here I am on this show.”
Revealing how his collaboration with superstar Olivia Rodrigo came about, David says “She reached out to me which was a very nice surprise.”
Jonathan then quizzes David on his favourite contemporary artists to which David replies “Oh my God. The Rosalia record. There is a young artist named Willow, Willow Smith. Child of very well known parents but she is doing really interesting stuff.” Confirming he is a fan of Lily Allen’s work, David says “I think everybody knows that record by now. That is amazing. I’m so jealous but I’m not jealous of what she went through.”
David also speaks about the advancements in technology, how the public listen to music and whether that has changed the way he works and interacts with the audience, “I think it’s changed things in the audience and the listeners. In some ways, I complain about what artists get paid with the streaming system. One of the good things is it kind of levels the playing field in a certain way. You find people of all different ages listening to all different kinds of music. Young people listening to my music and music from people their own age. It doesn’t matter to them.”
Sharing his thoughts on AI, David says “I use it for some animation kind of things, video. It’s a tool that can be used that way. I’m a little weary of it scraping and amassing everything that has ever been written or recorded, every movie and everything else that is going to be sucked into this thing.” Asked by Jonathan on whether he’s considered utilising AI on a ‘lazy day’, David replies “I’m not tempted yet. Not yet.”
Jonathan is also joined by star of the much-anticipated Peaky Blinders film Tim Roth. Speaking about the film, Tim says “They’ve shunted into the Second World War in Birmingham. I’m the good guy in it. He’s trying to bring peace to this country and end the war. Ok, he’s nasty but he thinks he’s a good guy.”
Tim also speaks about how he doesn’t like to watch his work back on screen and how his Peaky Blinders colleagues insisted on this project and jokingly says “I haven’t for years and I really like it that way but Cillian threatened me and the director and the writer and also my wife.
“It came from being in a film, being on set and thinking this is going to be good and then seeing it at a screening and thinking they’ve butchered it. A couple of times, it was pretty rough so I thought I’ll keep the enjoyment in my head.”
Speaking about working with co-star Kurt Russell’s partner Goldie Hawn on the film Everyone Says I Love You, Tim says “I can’t sing and it was a musical. I did it for my wife and it actually did make her cry but I’m not sure whether it was for the right reason.”
“There was a moment with Goldie. It was a Woody Allen film. I play a character who shouldn’t be there but he’s there because of Drew Barrymore’s character. I come in and I’m a hooligan acting type and at one point Goldie walks past me and [in character] I just smacked her arse. The look that she gave me, I swore it wasn’t acting. I mean she’s good but she’s not that good. I thought she’s going to tear me up. I think that was the last time I saw her on that film.
“Years later, we’re [Tim and Kurt Russell] doing our thing on The Hateful Eight. I came out and who was walking across - him [Kurt] and Goldie - and at that point I walked over to her and said ‘I’ve been wanting to do this for so long. I don’t know if you remember but when we worked together and I slapped you, I just wanted to say I’m really, really sorry. She just broke down laughing. I’d carried the guilt for so long and she thought it was hilarious. I was quite terrified.”
Jonathan is also joined by The Sky at Night host and space scientist Dame Maggie Aderin following the release of her memoir Starchild.
Touching upon her childhood, Dame Maggie says “My childhood was quite weird. My father was very focused on education. I think when he came to the UK, he thought the UK was quite a hostile place as an immigrant and he thought the only way we could succeed was education. When I was like four years old, he would ask ‘what Oxbridge college are you going to?’ My problem is when I get to school I was at the back of the class because I was finding reading hard, I couldn’t spell and all those things really matter when you first start.”
Curious to hear her thoughts, Jonathan asks Dame Maggie about the existence of alien life and she replies “As a scientist, I truly believe there is life out there. To me, it is human hubris and we do it again and again. We were the centre of the universe, everything revolved around us. Our knowledge has evolved and we realise with each step how insignificant we are. In our galaxy, the milky way, there are approximately 300 billion stars. What we are finding is most of those stars have planets going around them. I am absolutely convinced there is life out there.”
Jonathan asks Dame Maggie whether she finds the enormity of that overwhelming and she says “It is quite overwhelming. But at the same time, we are part of that and that’s what I love - we are part of that cosmos.”
Dame Maggie also recounts arguing with Sir David Attenborough about the existence of alien-life and says “I have this argument with the great Sir David Attenborough that we might not recognise life and he was saying that all life needed water but there is a whole study called Astrobiology trying to work out what sort of life we might find in different planets out there. It’s an exciting time.”
Hilarious comedian Sara Pascoe also joins Jonathan while she is on tour with her new show Sara Pascoe: I Am A Strange Gloop.
On the name of her new tour, Sara reveals “There is a philosophy book I was trying to read called I Am A Strange Loop. I’ve had two kids in quite quick succession - IVF in my forties. They were saying ‘What’s your tour going to be about? What are you going to talk about?’ At that point I honestly did not know who I was anymore. Neither of my children sleep through the night. I thought I’ve got no idea what I’m going to talk to an audience about. So, that’s where the title came from. They’ve put a nice dress on me tonight but I’m usually covered in yoghurt and baked beans in my pocket so I am a strange gloop. Essentially, it’s careful what you wish for.”
Sara recounts the time she received a package from Lily Allen and says “During the lockdowns, I got this phone call from a PR woman saying ‘Lily Allen would like to sexually empower you’ and I said ‘alright’. A couple of hours later a man knocked at my door. He’s holding this box with gold letters on the front that says ‘I masturbate’. He chucked this box at me and scuttled away.
“I left it on the floor, I didn’t know what was inside but I now know what was inside. It was tissue, some chocolates and a sex toy because Lily Allen had put her name to a sex toy that apparently worked really well for helping women be in charge of their own pleasure - I can’t tell you if any of that is true. I gave it to the charity shop.”
Speaking about her life before becoming a comedian, Sara reveals she had dreams of becoming an actor and says “I wanted to be an actor for many years. I auditioned for drama school for five years and I didn’t get in - I’m very lucky I am a comedian and play myself all the time. I don’t think I’m a good actor. I auditioned once for a reality television show. I auditioned for Barrymore’s My Kind of People and I had been practising with a tape of More Than Words.”
At the end of the show, Noah Kahan performs live.
The Jonathan Ross Show airs Saturday nights on ITV1 and ITVX.
