PREVIEW: Race Across The World

Five teams set off from Mexico City – a gargantuan metropolis and the largest Spanish speaking city in the world - in a race to reach the most southerly city in the world, Ushuaia in Argentina.

Dom and Lizzie Siblings Dom and Lizzie are from Whetherby in Yorkshire, who have drifted apart and want to rebuild their relationship through travel. Born just 16 months apart, siblings Dom and Lizzie were very close as children but drifted apart as teenagers and now only see each other three times a year. They both want to find motivation for the next stages in their lives and hope the race will help them discover that.

Emon and Jamiul Emon, from Bradford and Jamiul, from Oldham, are uncle and nephew who have been reunited after 10 years apart.

After being isolated from the wider family, Emon spent ten years apart from Jamiul, reuniting at a family wedding three months before the race. Emon used to be a risk-taker and thrill-seeker, and even climbed Mount Everest and Kilimanjaro in his 20s. But as he grew up, his mind turned to making money and running his two businesses. Jamiul thinks his uncle’s personality and character will get them through the race. His only worry is that they will spend their time arguing which of the two is is better looking.

Jo and Sam Mother and son from Manchester, Jo wants to teach Sam to explore the world.

Jo first went backpacking over 30 years ago. Now in her 50s, she wants to teach her son how to explore the world, and support him before he decides to take on adventures of his own. Sam suffers from ADHD and was struggling at school growing up. He has now found ways of managing his condition and is enjoying the world of work.

Jen and Rob A married couple from Reading, Jo and Rob are trying to reconnect after a life-changing event led to a loss of hearing.

Jen and Rob have been together for nine years and married for five for them. As a child, Rob suffered from Cholesteatoma, an abnormal collection of cells leaving him deaf in one ear. During his operation to remove the disease, Rob lost all of the hearing in his ‘good ear', and now relies on his other weak ear, which has just 20% hearing.

Shuntelle and Michael Ex-military and outdoor aficionado Michael, wants to take his five-star travelling girlfriend Shuntelle out of her comfort zone.

South Londoners Shuntelle and Michael met on Tinder three years ago, but are yet to take the plunge and move in together. Practical and cautious Shuntelle is used to high-class business travel and the safety of all-inclusive resorts when going on holiday. Whereas ex-military man Michael prefers a bit of danger somewhere in the great outdoors. This race will be the longest time they've spent together and a huge test to their relationship.
