The Great | Series 2 Preview (Channel 4)

The Emmy-nominated drama returns for a second series, which now sees Catherine (Elle Fanning) taking the Russian throne.

But she'll quickly learn that dethroning her husband Peter (Nicholas Hoult) was just the beginning, and she must now face the realities of 'liberating' a country that doesn't want to be free.

Her fight to bring enlightenment to Russia will mean battling her own court and those closest to her, including her own mother (Gillian Anderson). She will also battle her own heart as she continues to navigate her relationship with Peter.

Series two kicks off four months after Catherine launched a coup against her husband, as a pregnant Catherine is gaining the upper hand in her war against Peter.

The fact that he is deeply in love with Catherine and their unborn child does little to dissuade her from taking his throne.

The Great returns Wednesday 27th July at 10pm on Channel 4.
