PREVIEW: I Am Maria, Channel 4

The third of three films in a female-led drama anthology series of stand-alone programmes, starring three of Britain's leading actors, from BAFTA-winning writer-director Dominic Savage.

The trilogy explores the experience of three women in moments that are emotionally raw, thought-provoking and personal. The stories for each film have been developed in creative partnership with the leading actors, using improvised dialogue, and include the themes of relationships, mental health and empowerment.

The third and final film of the series tells the story of Maria (Oscar-nominated Lesley Manville), who is at a crossroads in life. Feigning happiness in her marriage to John (Michael Gould) has become suffocating, and Maria's 60th birthday sparks clarity about her suppressed feelings of discontent. She longs for another journey to find liberation and happiness again.

I Am Maria explores thought-provoking, universal issues of identity and doubt, and the painful cracks that can slowly form in lifelong relationships.

Airs Thursday on Channel 4.
