This compelling true crime series begins with a chilling piece of audio - a real recording made by a killer. Each episode in the series investigates a different murder case, retracing events from the moment a crucial call was made. Sometimes it’s a desperate 999 call, other times a voicemail, or call to a loved one, but in every case, the voice we hear belongs to the person responsible for the crime.

Some killers attempt to hide their guilt behind panic or false concern, while others use the call to construct an alibi or manipulate the truth. Each recording offers a haunting glimpse into the mind of a murderer and becomes a vital clue in the police investigation. Combining original audio, real-life testimony, and meticulous detective work, this series reveals how the smallest detail in a killer’s call can unlock the path to justice.
When 33-year-old mother of five Sarah Wellgreen vanished from her home in Kent in October 2018, her ex-partner, taxi driver Ben Lacomba, called 999 to report her missing. He told police that Sarah must have left in the middle of the night. But almost immediately, detectives sensed that something wasn’t right when they found her car, keys, and handbag still inside the house. Sarah’s disappearance was completely out of character, and Ben Lacomba’s account quickly raised suspicion.
As the search for Sarah intensified, the police began to uncover troubling inconsistencies in Lacomba’s story and suspicious movements caught on CCTV. Forensic teams worked around the clock, scouring Sarah’s home and Lacomba’s taxi for traces of evidence, but they didn’t find enough to charge him with her murder.
Detectives mapped out his every movement in the days surrounding her disappearance, revealing a pattern of control and jealousy that had dominated the couple’s relationship. Lacomba’s calm demeanour and rehearsed explanations contrasted sharply with the growing mountain of contradictions. His CCTV had been inexplicably turned off on the night Sarah disappeared, and when police requested his phone as evidence, it mysteriously went missing.
As weeks turned into months, detectives refused to give up hope of finding answers. Their investigation became a race against time to build a case strong enough to stand up in court without the most crucial piece of evidence - Sarah’s body. Using mobile phone data, location tracking, and CCTV, the team slowly closed in on the truth, uncovering how Lacomba’s carefully-constructed story began to crumble under pressure.
The episode follows the meticulous police work that turned an apparently routine missing person inquiry into a complex murder case. With no body ever found, detectives faced an uphill battle to prove their case, relying on digital footprints, forensic science, and the chilling recordings made by Lacomba himself in his 999 call to the police. Through interviews with detectives, friends, and family, the programme reveals how every word became vital in exposing the truth and bringing justice for Sarah Wellgreen and her loved ones.
