BBC Factual announces Lucy Worsley Investigates: The American Revolution, a two-part series made by BBC Studios Specialist Factual Productions for BBC Two, iPlayer and PBS, to mark the Declaration of Independence’s 250th anniversary.

Presenter Lucy Worsley is back on the detective trail. She wants to understand why the British Empire - the most powerful in history - lost the War of Independence against a ragtag band of American rebels. It’s a question that will take her on a revelatory, and very unexpected, journey.

Lucy will tell this American story from the perspective of Britain. By interrogating this largely untold standpoint of the conflict, she’ll reveal that this wasn’t just a pivotal moment in the forging of the USA… but in the re-making of Britain too.

Lucy Worsley said: “Digging into the past is a true joy for me. So often history gets written by the winners: lots of people know the US side of the American Revolution, but much fewer the British one. Interrogating amazing sources and meeting people who can shine a light on this hidden history, I can’t wait to explore the forgotten and surprising story of how losing America affected Britain and beyond.”

Simon Young, BBC Head of Commissioning, History, said: "Lucy has a unique ability to take any corner of history and make it relatable, surprising and revelatory for audiences, and we're thrilled to have her back on the BBC again, doing what she does best. As the 250th anniversary approaches, there's no-one better placed to explore the British perspective on an event that has shaped the world ever since.”

“Lucy is a PBS treasure, beloved by our audiences for bringing her signature wit and contemporary perspective to history,” said Zara Frankel, Senior Director, Programming and Development at PBS. “As America approaches its Semiquincentennial, I can’t think of anyone better to guide us through this story from a British point of view, as part of PBS America @ 250, our multiyear initiative honoring the nation's founding.”

Amanda Lyon, Executive Producer, said: “I’m delighted to be working with Lucy again, to look at a moment in history which is seen in very different ways on different sides of the Atlantic. It feels like the ideal subject for Lucy Worsley Investigates.”

Lucy Worsley Investigates: The American Revolution, a 2x60’ for BBC Two and iPlayer, is made by BBC Studios Specialist Factual Productions.
