PREVIEW: The Great British Spitfire Restoration, Channel 4

Narrated by Al Murray, this documentary follows a dedicated team of restorers as they attempt to completely rebuild a 1943 Spitfire and get her back into the air.

Hidden away in a little-known workshop at one of Britain's most important wartime airbases, a team of engineers and enthusiasts work around the clock to bring this national icon back to life.

Over the course of a year, this special programme, based on the More4 series Inside the Spitfire Factory, follows the restoration of an unusual 1943 Mark IX Spitfire, as factory owner Peter Monk and his crew try to transform it from rusty remains into flying legend.

With a colourful cast of characters, including one of the aircraft's original 1940s pilots, this gripping narrative brings a unique insight into the engineering and history of Britain's most iconic fighter plane. And it's a restoration that's also a deeply emotional tribute to all those who lost their lives in World War II.

The Great British Spitfire Restoration airs Saturday at 8pm on Channel 4.
