In What Not to Eat, award-winning scientist Professor Tim Spector will be helping the UK navigate the baffling world of ultra-processed foods (UPFs), thought to directly contribute to the UK’s rising obesity rates.

As well as the usual junk food and ready meal suspects, Professor Spector will highlight how seemingly healthy ‘low-fat’, ‘low calorie’ options are hiding some ultra processed health horrors. He’ll then be offering nutritious alternatives and take us back to basics, showing us what to shop, cook and eat in a bid to transform the nation’s health.
He will be joined by GP Dr Kandi Ejiofor, who will work directly with UK families to remove the worst UPF offenders from their diet. Each programme will feature one UK family suffering from various health concerns including headaches, high blood pressure, low libido, high cholesterol, diabetes, weight and joint problems.
Professor Tim Spector said: “It’s hard for people to make good dietary choices when what they’re sold as ‘healthy’ food, in my view, can hardly be defined as food at all. I passionately believe that even quite modest changes to our diet can have a big impact on our health, and I cannot wait to get started on this new series where I’m going to try and change people’s lives by changing what they eat.”
The 4 x 60 series is commissioned for Channel 4 by Clemency Green, Senior Commissiong Editor for Lifestyle, with Jo Street, Head of Lifestyle and Director of Commissioning, Nations & Regions. Executive Producer is Plum’s Head of Factual Gill Wilson, and Series Producer is Rosie Bray.
Channel 4’s Clemency Green comments: “We’re delighted to have Professor Tim Spector and Dr Kandi Ejiofor bringing contributors and viewers at home insights that will help improve how they eat and how they feel. They’ll be using their expertise in this series to demystify the confusing world of ultra-processed foods and show us how to shop and eat better for our mental and physical wellbeing.”
Plum Pictures’ Gill Wilson adds: “We’re delighted to work with Tim and Kandi on this new series, to help us work out what we the best food options are for us and our family on a daily basis.”
What Not to Eat will air on Channel 4 in 2026.
