The Three Lions were semi-finalists when the tournament was last held four years ago, but they arrive in Qatar on the back of a six-match winless run in the Nations League.
Iran has won just two matches at their five previous World Cup appearances but laid down a warning by defeating Uruguay 1-0 in September.
