VIGIL RENEWED FOR SECOND SERIES ON BBC ONE

If you missed it

In 2021, Vigil was the UK’s most-watched new drama launch in three years (since Bodyguard in 2018), attracting an audience of over 13 million viewers across 30-days for episode one, and the series overall had an average of 12.6m viewers (30-days).

Vigil will return for a second series and will be set and filmed in Scotland again.

Series 1

When a crew member is found dead on board the Trident nuclear submarine HMS Vigil, police in Scotland are called in to investigate. The catch? The UK’s nuclear deterrent must remain unbroken, so the submarine stays on patrol and Detective Chief Inspector Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) must go aboard to begin an investigation.

Although the death was written off as an accidental overdose, Amy suspects foul play. But when the crew close ranks in the face of Amy’s questioning, a new threat overshadows her inquiry.

Vigil was renewed alongside Time, The Responder and The Tourist. Charlotte Moore, BBC Chief Content Officer says: “The BBC is on fire creatively and the return of four of our biggest dramas over the last year demonstrates the sheer scale and range of storytelling on the BBC.”

Vigil (6x60’) series 2 is written and created by Tom Edge and made by World Productions (Showtrial, Line of Duty, Bodyguard) for BBC One and iPlayer.

Series 1 of Vigil is available now on BBC iPlayer. More details - including casting - will be revealed in due course.
