The BBC's 2025 ghost story for Christmas, Mark Gatiss's adaptation of EF Benson's The Room in the Tower.

It's 1944, and while sheltering during an air raid, Roger strikes up a conversation with Verity, a Wren. When he asks if she dreams, he begins to recount the haunting vision that has followed him for most of his life: a recurring dream of a mysterious house, a silent family on the lawn and an unseen, unidentified terror lurking in the room in the tower.
But when he is invited to stay at a country estate eerily similar to the one in his dreams, and is assigned the very same room, he becomes increasingly disturbed as his nightmare begin to become reality. What is really lurking, waiting for him in the room in the tower?
Previous festive tales for the BBC from Gatiss have included last year’s Woman of Stone, The Mezzotint, Martin’s Close, Count Magnus and The Tractate Middoth - all of which were based on works by M.R James. In 2023 he wrote and directed Lot No. 249 - an adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s short story.
The Room In The Tower: A Ghost Story For Christmas airs Christmas Eve on BBC Two.
