Channel 4 commissions landmark documentary on The Nottingham Attacks, following the bereaved families’ brave campaign for truth and justice.

Two years ago on 13th June 2023, three British families received the most devastating news: their loved ones, Barney Webber, Grace Kumar-O’Malley and Ian Coates had all been killed in a fatal knife attack in the early hours of the morning in Nottingham. Police quickly arrested Valdo Calocane - a man well known to police and mental health services.
But for the shocked and grieving families, this would turn out to be just the beginning of a terrible journey of discovery. The powerful new film w/t The Nottingham Attacks, will follow the families’ campaign for justice, looking at multiple failings across the very agencies tasked with protecting the public, and shaking their trust in the police, the NHS and even the courts.
With the public inquiry into the attacks looming next year, this timely film will follow the families as they look at missed opportunities to prevent the deaths of Barney, Grace and Ian, and as they reckon with the deadly consequences of Britain’s mental health crisis.
With access to all three families, their legal team, and others closely connected to the case, this eye-opening 90-minute documentary will tell the story of three ordinary families taking on the most powerful agencies of the state to get justice for their loved ones and answers for us all.
The film will be produced by Banijay UK’s premium documentaries label, DSP Films, led by BAFTA-winning doc-maker Graeme McAulay (Jeremy Kyle: Death On Daytime, 24 Hours In Police Custody). BAFTA-winner Nancy Bornat (Defiance: Fighting The Far Right) joins Graeme as Executive Producer. Nancy and Graeme bring together long track records making documentaries telling crime stories with respect, sensitivity and purpose.
Graeme McAulay, Executive Producer said: As we mark the anniversary of the deaths of Barney, Grace and Ian, we’re proud to be making this urgent and vital film for Channel 4. It tells a powerful story that will take viewers far beyond the headlines of this terrible crime. Following three brave families searching for the truth, the documentary will reveal shocking discoveries about the people entrusted to protect us and lay bare uncomfortable truths about a system in crisis, endangering us all.
Anna Miralis, Senior commissioning Editor added: “Channel 4 has an outstanding reputation for bold, topical and incredible access documentaries and The Nottingham Attacks (w/t) is without doubt testament to this. Boasting a stalwart of incredibly talented film makers, I am sure this will be an extremely powerful and sensitively considered documentary.
