Alongside voting for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2025 award, for the first time in the show’s history, the Team of the Year award will also be decided via a live public vote on the night, handing fans across the UK the power to crown the team that inspired them most this year. It’s a new chapter that puts the audience at the heart of the biggest night in British sport.

Hosted by Clare Balding, Gabby Logan and Alex Scott, the star-studded show will broadcast live from the home of BBC Sport at MediaCity, Salford, on Thursday 18 December, from 7pm to 9pm on BBC One and iPlayer.

This year’s ceremony will pay tribute to a phenomenal 12 months of sporting drama and triumph – from the Women’s Euros and the Women’s Rugby World Cup, to Team Europe winning the Ryder Cup victory, Liverpool’s Premier League title, Arsenal women’s Champions League success, and the Lions’ first tour series win in Australia for 12 years. Add to that, there were record-breaking moments across cricket, athletics, golf, tennis, and more. As always, the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards will bring the nation together to celebrate the athletes, teams and coaches who defined 2025.

Alex Kay-Jelski, Director of BBC Sport says: “This year has been once again packed full of amazing sporting moments and stories. I'm glad it's not me having to pick who to vote for! We’ve seen drama, triumph and unforgettable moments on a global scale – and our homegrown stars, especially the women, have delivered like never before. I can’t wait to see who the public chooses to take home the win and celebrate another brilliant year.”

As the UK’s most-used sports broadcaster, BBC Sport was front and centre throughout the year, delivering world-class storytelling and unmissable coverage. Millions tuned in for the Women’s Euro’s and the Women’s Rugby World Cup, with both tournaments driving record-breaking audiences across BBC Sport TV and digital platforms. The Women’s Euro final was watched by 12.2 million viewers becoming the most-watched TV moment of the year – with the nation united through sport.

The seven award categories are:

  • Sports Personality of the Year

  • World Sport Star of the Year

  • Helen Rollason award

  • Young Sports Personality of the Year

  • Coach of the Year

  • Team of the Year

  • Lifetime Achievement award

The official shortlists for all BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2025 award categories will be revealed in December, ahead of the event.

Audiences will be able to vote for World Sport Star of the Year ahead of the live show. Team of the Year voting will also open before the show day and close during the programme. The vote for Sports Personality of the Year will open and close during the live show. Once the shortlists are announced in December, all voting will be available online at bbc.co.uk/spoty.

Adding to the celebration, the BBC Radio Leeds choir, Bantam of the Opera, formed of 50 Bradford City football fans in celebration of their city’s UK City of Culture title, will take to the stage at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2025 awards show. The choir will honour sporting stars lost this year with a moving orchestral adaptation of their club anthem Midland Road.
