In a world where travel has become more about taking photos for social media than truly taking it all in, this five part series challenges teammates to see the world differently, as their surroundings hold all the clues. The pairs will solve clues that take them across Japan.

Their inter-generational relationship holds the key to victory as the journey requires teamwork, adaptability, and perception. Travelling across the abundant Asian archipelago, they’ll have to use every resource at their disposal to stay in the game.

Will the youngsters manage to build a relationship with their pensioner partners as they tackle cultural challenges, decode cryptic clues and answer location based questions together? At every stage of the journey the stakes get higher as the teams are eliminated one by one until just two pairs remain. Those two will reach the final location and compete to win a life-changing cash prize of £50,000.

Episode 1: An epic treasure hunt across Japan where six young Brits who have never travelled alone are paired with six older Brits who thought they’d never travel again. To stand a chance of winning £50,000, the teams must overcome their differences and work together bridging the generation gap in a race full of adventure, challenges and surprises.

Episode 2: The treasure hunt continues in Kyoto, where the unlikely travellers begin to bond as the adventure draws the duos closer together. Colin shares a life changing moment, while Katie admits she’s never truly felt cared for. While Tony and Emma and Rosie and Lawrence are most at risk of elimination, no team is safe in the quest for £50,000.

Episode 3: Five intergenerational teams remain as the treasure hunt moves to Hiroshima, where the past lives on in the present. Immersing themselves in local culture - from origami and karaoke to sake and okonomiyaki - the intergenerational teams compete to stay in the running for £50,000. Failure to work as one means it’s sayonara for another duo at a dramatic coin count.

Episode 4: The treasure hunt heats up in Japan’s kitchen, Osaka, with only four teams left. In a series-first group challenge, the youngsters lean on their seniors, while favourite pairs find themselves at risk with low scores. The older contestants reflect on what they’ve learned, opening themselves to futures they never imagined. A shock result shakes the coin count and an unlikely duo is sent home.

Episode 5: The treasure hunt across Japan reaches its final stop, with just three duos remaining. Colin gets closer to healing his grief during a foraging challenge, while Barbara and Katie enjoy some R and R.

Can one youngster overcome their fear of crabs, or will it put their chance at the £50,000 prize at risk? An iconic finale at The Buddha on the Hill reveals the winner in a head-to-head challenge, but even the losers leave with a once-in-a-lifetime adventure and a lifelong friend.

Worlds Apart begins Tuesday 7th October at 9:15pm on Channel 4.
