The BBC has acquired The Narrow Road to the Deep North, a sweeping new adaptation of Richard Flanagan’s Booker Prize-winning novel, for BBC iPlayer and BBC One from Curio Pictures and Sony Pictures Television.

The series is a five-part saga charting the life of Dorrigo Evans, played by Jacob Elordi (Euphoria, Saltburn) as a young man, with Ciarán Hinds (Kin, Belfast) as the older Dorrigo, through his passionate love affair with Amy Mulvaney, played by Odessa Young (Manodrome, The Stand), his time held captive in a WW2 POW camp, and his later years spent as a revered surgeon and reluctant war hero.

An intimate character study of a complex man, the epic drama is a compelling portrayal of the courage and cruelty of war, and a timeless love story that sustains one through the darkest of times.

Episode 1: While writing a speech for an upcoming book launch, renowned surgeon and celebrated war hero Dorrigo Evans is thrust back into memories of his time as a POW during World War II and of his brief, unforgettable love affair with Amy Mulvaney.

Episode 2: The love affair between Dorrigo and Amy flourishes. In the jungle, conditions have worsened since they were first imprisoned, and Dorrigo and the men are exposed to hitherto unimagined cruelties.

Episode 3: Dorrigo comes under investigation for a risky procedure he performed, placing a further strain on his marriage. The younger Dorrigo shows deep love and care towards the soldiers when a cholera outbreak spreads through the POW camp.

Episode 4: Dorrigo and Amy's affair must end when he is shipped off to war, where as a prisoner, he and the other POWs witness and share a horrific event that will haunt them forever.

Episode 5: In the 1940s, Dorrigo returns from the war and tries to get on with his life, married to Ella but without Amy and the men he left behind in the jungle. As an older man, the day of the book launch arrives, and Dorrigo shares his reflections on his life and on Rabbit’s sketches of their time in the jungle.

The Narrow Road to the Deep North (5x45’) begins Sunday 20th July at 9pm on BBC One.
