Netflix have announced the recommission of crime drama Legends from writer Neil Forsyth (The Gold, Guilt) and produced by Tannadice Pictures (The Gold), for a second series.

Based on extensive research and interviews with those involved, and inspired by one of the most remarkable criminal investigations ever conducted, the story follows an unlikely group of British customs employees sent undercover to infiltrate some of the country’s most dangerous criminal drug gangs.

In the early 1990s, Her Majesty’s Customs and Excise was losing its battle with illegal drug smuggling across Britain’s borders. In a top-secret operation, a small team of Customs employees were sent undercover. Their task: to infiltrate Britain’s most dangerous drug gangs. But these were not trained spies.

They were normal men and women, plucked from ordinary lives around the UK, put through a basic training regime and tasked with building new identities in the criminal underworld. These identities were called Legends.

Leading the cast are Tom Burke alongside Steve Coogan, Hayley Squires and Aml Ameen. Also in the cast are Jasmine Blackborow, Douglas Hodge, Tom Hughes, Johnny Harris, Gerald Kyd and Charlotte Ritchie.

Neil Forsyth, writer and creator of Legends, said: "I’m delighted to have the opportunity to tell a new story in the fascinating and unique world that Legends offers, and to show just how dangerous, thrilling, and important their work became in the late 1990s."

Legends is available now on Netflix.
