The BBC has commissioned BBC Current Affairs to produce a 1x60' documentary for BBC Two and iPlayer which will see chef Heston Blumenthal open up for the first time about his recent bipolar diagnosis.

Heston: My Life with Bipolar was filmed over a period of sixth months and has exclusive access to the star as he talks for the first time about being sectioned and diagnosed with the mental health condition two years ago after experiencing hallucinations and suicidal thoughts.

The one-off will also see Heston's family their experiences and share how he is rebuilding his life and his concerns about the potential impact the condition could have on his creativity. The celebrity chef will also meet members of the public with similar experiences to examine the state of bipolar care in the UK and the challenges of getting treatment.

Heston Blumenthal commented: "It took me 50 years to get a diagnosis, so it’s been an extraordinary journey to get where I am today. There is still a big stigma around bipolar, but it is vital to be able to talk openly about the condition. "I know this isn’t always easy, but I hope by sharing my experience in this documentary people will gain a greater understanding of bipolar and an insight into my life now."

More details will be announced in due course.
