BRITAIN'S BRIGHTEST FAMILY AXED BY ITV AFTER FOUR SERIES

The ITV quiz show, hosted by The Chase's Anne Hegerty, will not be returning for another series, TV Zone understands.

The half-hour quiz, which began in 2018, saw two teams of three family members answer questions on the buzzers. The latest series - a celebrity special - aired last Summer.

ITV confirmed there were no plans for future series when approached by TV Zone. The news comes after ITV controller Kevin Lygo suggested many shows which aired in the same weekday post-soap slot were set for the chop.

Speaking to Broadcast magazine, Kevin Lygo said: "We extended the news by half an hour and shifted the soaps - and the programming that's gone, you can't remember...

"It was perfectly good, honest it was, but it was for a gentler age when there wasn't so much choice. It doesn't work when there's an amazing five million pound an hour drama to watch on Netflix."

The format began with civilian contestants, with teams comprising of a child as team captain with two family members. In 2020, it was announced the format would adapt to include Celebrity families instead of members of the public.

The first two series comprised of 15 episodes each, which ran weekly on Wednesday nights on ITV. The two series of celebrity specials had a shorter run of 7 episodes each.

The two celebrity series were won by Shaun Williamson's and Matthew Wright's teams.

Previous episodes of Britain's Brightest Family air available on ITV Hub.
