BETTER: BBC DRAMA AXED AFTER ONE SERIES

The BBC have axed drama Leeds-based redemption story Better, from the writers of Humans, Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley, after one series.

Leila Farzad and Andrew Buchan led the cast of the five-part drama, alongside Samuel Edward-Cook, Zak Ford-Williams, Ceallach Spellman, Carolin Stoltz, Anton Lesser and Olivia Nakintu.

The synopsis reads: After a family tragedy is narrowly averted, a corrupt police detective undergoes a painful moral awakening and decides to put right 20 years of wrongdoing - but satisfying her newfound conscience won’t be straightforward.

She slowly realises that her redemption will only be complete once she brings down the powerful gangster she has worked for all this time, a man she helped rise to power, and has come to love like a brother.

A source told The Sun: "Better did good business, averaging almost four million viewers an episode, and there was an appetite to learn more about the tangled lives of McHugh and Slack. But the BBC is keen to bring a slew of new shows which means that, unfortunately, some popular dramas have to make way."

Better is available on BBC iPlayer.
