A documentary celebrating the life and extraordinary career of Susan Boyle, one of Scotland’s most beloved singing stars, will air on BBC One Scotland and on iPlayer as part of the festive schedule.

Commissioned by BBC Popular Music TV and BBC Scotland, There's Only One Susan Boyle (w/t), will tell the story of the woman behind the voice, featuring an exclusive interview with the popular singer alongside insights from friends, collaborators and fans.

The 45’ documentary from Tern TV which will air on Hogmanay will also feature a treasure trove of archive footage and personal photographs.

In 2009, Susan, an unassuming woman from Blackburn, Scotland, became an overnight singing sensation. In a jaw-dropping audition on Britain’s Got Talent she stunned UK viewers with a now legendary rendition of I Dreamed a Dream.

Simon Cowell and his panel of judges were rendered speechless; the audience gave her a standing ovation, and within 24 hours she was a viral YouTube sensation. The performance has since been viewed more than 264 million times online and catapulted Susan - affectionally known as SUBO - to global stardom.

Audiences will be taken on a journey from Susan’s childhood through to the audition that changed everything. The uplifting documentary will explore the wild, funny, moving and often surreal years that have brought her to the life she lives today.

Susan Boyle said: "I'm delighted to be sharing my story in this new documentary with the team at Tern. My life changed overnight after Britain's Got Talent, and it has been an extraordinary and unexpected journey ever since. I hope the programme reminds viewers to stay true to themselves and follow their dreams."

Heather Kane-Darling, Commissioning Editor, BBC Scotland, said: "Susan Boyle's story is one of the most remarkable and uplifting to come out of Scotland in recent decades. From a small town in West Lothian to stages around the world, her journey has inspired millions. This warm, honest and entertaining portrait of a truly unique Scottish talent will be a festive treat for our audiences."

David Marshall, Creative Director, Tern TV, said: "We are hugely excited to be working with BBC Scotland and BBC Music to bring this unmistakably Scottish story to screens. More than a decade and a half since she first wowed the nation, Susan's story continues to inspire, and in her own words we get to hear how that one moment in time changed her life forever and made her a true national treasure."

There's Only One Susan Boyle is executive produced by David Marshall and directed by Rod Tamime for Tern TV. BBC commissioners are Heather Kane-Darling for BBC Scotland and Rachel Davies for Popular Music Television.
