Before the shows on the list, the biggest TV event of the year was the Euro2020 final in July. It was watched by 18,035,713 on BBC One, and a further 4,443,758 on ITV. Boris Johnson's address to the nation on Monday 4th January was watched by 14,330,522.

Line Of Duty was the stand out hit of 2021, with 15,713,204 viewers tuning in for the series six final on Sunday 2nd May.

In second place was Oprah's interview with the Duke And Duchess of Sussex. Airing on ITV in April, the interview was watched by 14,820,359 viewers.

Third was the live final of Strictly Come Dancing 2021, which saw Rose Ayling-Ellis crowned winner, with 12,186,466 viewers.

The launch of the latest series of I'm A Celebrity was the fourth most watched show of the year, with 11,044,719

New BBC drama Vigil, starring Suranne Jones, came in at fifth with 10,377,000 viewers watching the series final in September. 9,957,897 watched episode one five weeks earlier.
