Kate Humble and JJ Chalmers are given unprecedented access to the Royal Navy, both at sea and across many of their establishments back home. The cameras are on board as a British warship hunts down a Russian submarine; Kate gets special clearance to go behind the scenes at Britian's secretive submarine base at Faslane in Scotland and JJ reveals what it takes to be an elite Royal Marine Commando as he journeys back to the beginning of his military career.

Alongside Kate and JJ, roving-reporter Dwayne Fields discovers how crucial historical events shaped Britain’s oldest fighting service, including the 105-year-old former Wren, who kept Britain fighting in World War 2 while JJ takes part in a moving reunion with former colleagues he served alongside when he was injured whilst on operations in Afghanistan.

In this dramatic first episode Kate Humble steps on board a British warship for the very first time and ends up caught up in an incident that became front page news and was one of the most dangerous experiences of her career, as HMS Iron Duke tracks a Russian submarine that’s at risk of exploding, inside British waters.

HMS Iron Duke is a Type 23 frigate and Kate joins the crew as they set off on an important mission protecting British shores. On board for 2 weeks, Kate gets a taste of what life is like for its 200 strong crew – before events take a dramatic turn.

Just days into Kate’s visit, the ship is ordered to intercept a Russian submarine heading towards British waters, amid reports that the submarine has a mechanical fault and is at risk of exploding.

With amazing access to the entire operation, Kate gets to witness a British warship scramble to intercept one of Vladamir Putin’s deadly submarines. But as the ship heads towards its target, Storm Amy begins to batter the coast of the UK, and the entire mission is thrown into jeopardy.

With incredible access inside the entire sensitive and dangerous military operation, Kate gets to witness a British warship at sea, and her crew track down the Russians and follow them through the English Channel…

Warship: Life in The Royal Navy returns Wednesday 1st April at 8pm on 5.
