The Yorkshire Vet returns, following all the drama, laughter and tears as a group of town and country vets, at four different practices across the county, help animals of all kinds. Christopher Timothy, who once played the world’s most famous vet, James Herriot, provides the series narration.

Peter Wright has a dream. A dream that, across the country, animal lovers could have wonderful places where they can forever remember the pets who’ve enriched their lives.

So, in this special episode, Peter embarks on an ambitious passion project to make that dream come true. It takes him down to Sussex to meet the country’s first animal chaplain and her church’s pet memorial garden, inspiring him to create something similar back in Yorkshire. And to the stunning Howardian Hills national landscape, one of the locations around the country where he wants to place a number of pet memorial benches.

Rob and Dave Nicholson from Cannon Hall Farm offer their support, keen to pay a lasting tribute to their Shire horse of a lifetime, Herkules. Peter’s vet colleagues want to help too. As well as scanning Grace the Shire horse to see if she’s pregnant, meaning Herkules’s legacy will live on, Shona and Matt are on hand when Peter’s plans fall into place.

Vets know all about the heartache that comes with pet loss, and Julian Norton remembers special times with Jos, a charismatic Belgian hare. And on National Pet Memorial Day David Melleney and Rohin Aojula take part in an RSPCA Walk to Remember, which provides an opportunity for people to share stories about their pets while taking in some stunning Yorkshire scenery.

Meanwhile, Peter’s mission is given extra motivation when he sees that the oldest cow he’s ever treated, the charming 27-year-old Highland cow Big Girl is approaching the end of her fabulous life. And his life-changing journey takes him to London’s ITN Studios, to raise awareness about pet grief on Jeremy Vine’s show. Then, much closer home, back to the original Herriot practice in Thirsk… which might just be the perfect place to build a pet memorial garden.
