Drama starring Eleanor Tomlinson, Matthew Lewis, Danielle Walters, Denis Lawson and Callum Woodhouse.

Amanda Blakefield’s life is a happy one, with her husband Jimmy and their son Luke. But when Amanda is left an enormous inheritance by a man she has neither met nor heard of before, her life starts to fall apart. Amanda becomes embroiled in the world of the Worralls, where Martin Worrall is head of a family bound in past secrets. As Amanda is drawn further and further into past events and relationships, all of their lives are turned upside down.

Successful businessman Martin Worrall lives with his wife Fiona and son Anthony in their grand country home. On a day like any other Martin heads off to a conference, though he seems to be in a strange mood and receives a threatening text in the car. In his hotel room, he studies a photo, before aggressively tearing it up. He then gets in the bath, and behind the closed door... he kills himself. Left open on his phone is a photo of a woman. This is Amanda Blakefield...

Amanda works at her best friend Sandy’s restaurant along with her chef husband Jimmy. Amanda and Jimmy have a happy life, with their young son Luke. One day at work, solicitor Laura approaches Amanda and tells her that she’s been left a significant inheritance, including a country home, in a man called Martin Worrall’s will. Amanda’s never heard of him and is adamant that this must be a mistake.

That night, Amanda answers the phone, but nobody speaks. She doesn’t tell Jimmy, and instead searches for information online, where she finds Martin’s substantial house in the country, Brackburn House.

At work, among dozens of photos of the waitresses with customers that are on the restaurant wall, Amanda is alarmed to spot a photo of her and Martin... Now thinking that perhaps this isn’t a mistake after all, Amanda goes to speak to her mother Linda, who is in a care home with dementia. Linda drifts in and out of lucidity and so doesn’t have any clear information for Amanda. Back at home, Amanda is forced to reveal the truth to Jimmy, who can’t understand why she’s not just accepting the will.

Amanda goes to Brackburn to see what she can find out. It seems everyone in the village knew Martin.

At the house, Amanda looks around in awe at the spectacular place with its sprawling grounds. It’s quiet but there’s a groundskeeper who shoots her an unfriendly glare. Amanda meets Fiona and Anthony who threaten her, saying that they don’t know how she manipulated Martin, but she needs to give up the claim to the inheritance, or they will take her to court.

At the house, Fiona and Anthony discuss their theories as to why Martin killed himself and why he didn’t leave a note. Meanwhile, Jimmy gets a mysterious phone call. And as Amanda leaves Brackburn, she’s put in a dangerous situation, discovering that these people really do mean business...

The Fortune begins Monday 1st June at 9pm on 5.
