Casualty 24/7: Every Second Counts showcases the work of Barnsley Hospital’s A & E department. In each episode, we spend a shift with staff as they battle to keep up with demand. Viewers get to know the patients who stream through the doors with an array of different conditions and stories to tell.

It’s the start of another busy shift for Sister Jane. She’s running the hub today and is already under pressure to get patients out of Barnsley Casualty and onto the wards. Every patient should be seen and moved out of the department within four hours, but with the hospital at full capacity, it's an uphill battle.
If it isn’t busy enough suddenly there’s an emergency in Reception itself. A 64-year-old man has collapsed and lost consciousness, and staff rush to help him. The Casualty team think he’s had a heart attack and need to get him to Resus immediately.
While they battle to save his life, another emergency is on the way. A 21-year-old is struggling to breathe and needs urgent medical attention. Cerys is in a critical condition: she’s having a life-threatening asthma attack. Advanced Clinical Practitioner Chantelle needs to get her breathing under control, urgently.
Patients have been flooding in all morning and the next one has just arrived. Sixty-seven-year-old John has been sent straight to radiology, with a suspected broken wrist. Consultant Doctor Clare Ginnis confirms the break. John’s wrist will need to be pulled back into position, but if the procedure isn’t successful he could face surgery.
Next in the stream of patients is nine-year-old Alice, who’s with her mum Louise. An accident in the playground has brought her to Paediatrics. The team suspect she’s broken her collarbone, but she needs an x-ray before treatment can begin.
Casualty 24/7: Every Second Counts returns Wednesday 23rd July on 5.
