Atlantis: The Discovery with Dan Snow | Preview (Channel 5)

Atlantis, a story that has captivated us since it was first told over 2000 years ago. But did this ancient city really exist?

Dan Snow travels to Greece to discover if there is any truth in this tale of the glorious super-city that disappeared beneath the waves. He investigates real ancient cities that were destroyed by earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis - could these have inspired the story of Atlantis?

On his journey to unravel the mysteries of Atlantis, Dan dives under the sea to swim through the streets of a sunken city, Pavlopetri. He walks through the magnificent lost royal palace at Knossos on Crete, with its stories of wine and bull worship that match Atlantis's tale.

He discovers the beautiful painted town of Akrotiri that was obliterated by a volcano. Finally, he looks at exciting new evidence for another coastal city, Helike, that was obliterated shortly before the story of Atlantis was first told. They helped to inspire a legend: the legend of Atlantis.
