Insomnia, the chronic sleeplessness condition, is thought to affect around 1 in 3 people the UK with some estimates suggesting as many as nine out of 10 adults experience issues with their sleep. With health experts warning that the physical effects of sleep-deprivation can be a contributing cause to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, depression and dementia, the nation is experiencing a worrying rise in sleep anxiety.

Channel 4 will take on the topic in a new single documentary from Belfast-based Afro-Mic Productions. The programme will examine the causes of lack of sleep, investigate the myths and misconceptions about tiredness, and offer tips and tricks for helping to get the best rest.

Channel 4’s Deborah Dunnet comments: “Channel 4 continues to tackle subjects that make us healthier and happier, and few things are more important for our wellbeing – both physical and mental – than getting enough sleep. I’m really pleased to have the creative team at Afro-Mic producing this documentary. I’ve already transformed how I sleep just from the revelation in their pitch”.

Afro Mic Productions’ Emma-Rosa Dias adds: “Our sleep is one of the biggest topics of daily conversation, from the school gates to the coffee queue. Afro-Mic Productions are incredibly excited to make this documentary exploring the very best scientifically-proven sleep advice out there. Our team is already sleeping better and we can’t wait to bring these tips and tricks to the audience.”

Knackered: Why Can’t We Sleep? (w/t) (1 x 60) is made by Afro-Mic Production for Channel 4.
