An ITV spokesperson confirmed to The Sun that the show would not be returning, adding: "The intention with this series was always to make a splash, raise awareness of shark conservation and change people’s perception of these majestic creatures and we’re proud we achieved that."

The series, which featured Ade Adepitan, Helen George, Sir Lenny Henry, Ross Noble, Dougie Poynter, Lucy Punch and Rachel Riley, aired on ITV this Summer to mark the 50th anniversary of Oscar-winning film Jaws.

The celebrities were tasked with diving with a different species of shark, with the breeds getting bigger and more dangerous each time. Bimini, the Bahamas island where the show was, is home to around 7-10 different shark types including Hammerheads, Bull sharks and Tiger sharks.

Meanwhile, ten celebrities from the worlds of entertainment, music, sport, and politics - Sara Davies, Graeme Souness, Ellie Taylor, John Bercow, Shakira Khan, JB Gill, Ranvir Singh, Jenny Ryan, Danny Aarons and Joey Essex - are set to take part in ITV’s newest entertainment format, The Box.

Hosted by legendary broadcaster Gary Lineker, The Box is a thrilling new format that plunges 10 celebrity contestants into the unknown. With each celebrity enclosed in a yellow box, they’ll find themselves in mystery locations across the country. They will never know where they are, or what challenge is facing them on the other side.

The challenges could be physical, mental, logical, funny, a bit daunting, or all of those at once. With minimal or no instruction, they must decipher and work out what to do. At the end of each episode, two players will battle it out in The Duel, a high-stakes head-to-head game to avoid elimination.

Shark! Celebrity Infested Waters is available on ITVX.
